Corsage Brooch

ARTIST STATEMENT
The inspiration that helped me design the “Corsage brooch” was a Georgia O’Keeffe painting. The painting, “Blue Flowers” inspired the overall shapes and forms used in my design . Coming up with the design was difficult because I wanted to layer the metal to create space. My color choice was black because O’Keefe uses many colors in her art work, and I didn't want it to look exactly like hers. At first, I wanted my brooch to look like a realistic flora painting by O’Keeffe, but then I decided I wanted my brooch to be different. I wanted to challenge myself by making it abstract, while at the same time, creating something unique. Another reason why I picked abstraction was because I notice that many people find that style to be interesting and captivating. For some reason people are just drawn to it. In the end, I am satisfied with my project, and enjoyed the process beginning with drawing, to working with the metal, to the finishing touches.

Mission Hills High School

My name is Lex Archibald and I am a Metalsmithing teacher at Mission Hills High School in the San Marcos Unified School District.  Metalsmithing is a UC course approved, and it is available to all    9-12th graders.  In Metalsmithing students learn how to work with non-ferrous metals such as copper and brass.  Students develop a skill set in using beginning techniques and processes while practicing critical thinking and self-expression.

 The Artist Brooch is an assignment where students create a brooch inspired by a well-known artist. Students identify how the artist uses the elements and principles of art in developing a signature style. Students base their design decisions on their findings and incorporate beginning soldering techniques to complete the assignment. The Artist Brooch Unit is divided into four sections of artistic development and objectives. They are: skill development, design/concept development, metalsmithing in historical and contemporary contexts, and analyzing artwork.

-Skill Development:  Soldering and annealing metal. Soldering will be explored through various solder seems such as a butt-joint, sweat solder seem, and soldering wire to sheet.
-Design/Concept development: Artistic style is explored through researching an artist for inspiration. Artistic styles are described and identified through analyzing how the elements and principles of art are used in artists’ compositions. 
-Historical and contemporary contexts: Students view a PowerPoint Presentation, which has examples of works by each artist listed on their assignment packet. Students then research chosen artist.
-Analysis of artwork: Students analyze and research their chosen artist and complete the research section of assignment packet. Students analyze classmates' work, exercising their knowledge of artistic style. Students match the brooch to the artist it was inspired by in a group activity.

I teach this project half-way through the year due to the amount of skill and knowledge the students have acquired at this point in the course.  This project provides them with examples of how an artist uses the elements/principles to articulate style.  Through practicing and borrowing these concepts of design, students gain deeper understanding of how these design concepts can be manipulated and used for artistic expression.  I consider the Artist Brooch Project a transition project.  Prior to this project, assignment objectives are technical and design driven.  After this project, students begin to take greater risks in concept development and self-expression.

Carmen Gonzalez’s brooch is an excellent example of a successful project for this assignment.  She investigated the work of Georgia O’Keeffe and was able to extrapolate and borrow dominant design components, which O’Keeffe is recognized for.  The organic use of line, shape, and form Carmen combined in her brooch is very reminiscent of O’Keefe’s style.  Carmen was attentive in both design and craftsmanship, and I feel she did a great job as a young aspiring metalsmith.
