Submersion Into IlluminationSYDNEY BUSIC

ARTIST STATEMENT
With this piece I attempted to put into practice a concept that was taught to me by an old art teacher: when we paint, we don’t paint objects, we paint light reflecting off of objects. I overemphasized this by flooding my subject with light, to the point where it washes out the object’s natural barrier to its surrounding. I also altered the colors to an unnatural hue to emphasize the importance of hi lighting how color bounces off of its surrounding objects to make the painting look truly alive. While painting this, I attempted to draw great attention to her eyes. The color I painted them is the color that they naturally are and is a way of showing the connection between the abstract colors and reality. You can see her eyes through the glare of her glasses, again, drawing importance to light. She is looking directly into the source of the light, making her look almost as if she was a deer in headlights.
