ARTIST STATEMENT
In this piece the older woman of Oaxacan decent represents the coming of age. At the time I painted this I had been struggling to find moderation between school, my job and those whom I genuinely care for. And I see this issue not only occurring in my situation but also my friends’, family’s and even teachers’; many live their lives without prioritizing what truly matters and before they know it they end up missing opportunities that focus on the aspects of life that have real meaning. This piece depicts an older woman being enveloped by nature as she comes closer to death. I feel that lately I have been caught up in multiple irrelevant habits that keep me from enjoying the natural world and actual relationships and humbling experiences. Personally, time has been moving passed me so rapidly that I’ve become worried if what I’ve done in my life so far has had a beneficial influence on the earth. The woman, like everyone else, is one with the earth and will always be, even after reaching death. |
