ARTIST STATEMENT
My piece consists of organic forms that contrast one another due to the variety of colors I chose to use. I purposely used bright yellows and light blues to emphasize the depth of the African woman in the piece. The woman, the central aspect of the painting, represents natural purity and perfection. She symbolically also contradicts racism. Many make misconceptions of those who are darker in complexion than those who lack a pigment in their skin color. The woman, being in her calm, pure and natural state, breaks down the absurdity of racism in which she embraces every color the earth provides for her. She refuses to believe that skin color is considered as a complex component of society that can define a person. The clothing she wears stands for the multiple colors and cultures of the world and the way they all come together on her body conveys some sense of unity. |
