Under WaterRaquel Rabines

ARTIST STATEMENT
This acrylic on board painting is part of a series of paintings that explore the figure under water. In the painting we see a pair of hands emerge from turquoise ripples of water. The space in the painting is enigmatic: it implies depth beneath the water’s surface and alludes to the figure floating beneath. I wanted the painting to have a sense of mystery. We do not know what lies beneath the water’s surface, just as we do not know what lies beneath the surface of the paint itself. The hands in the painting are gently touching each other, suggesting a peaceful environment surrounded by the stillness of the water. The painting was created with acrylic paint, acrylic gel medium and varnish. Pushing the acrylic paint and medium around the painting surface created the swirling effects of the water. In contrast the hands were painted clearly with subtle brush marks. The palette is in a calming turquoise and blue range that further emphasizes the quiet stillness of this image. |
