ARTIST STATEMENT
My piece is composed of different media consisting of pen and ink, watercolor, and twigs/leaves. I wanted to convey a sense of natural decline to remind humans that the technological innovations, progressive inventions, and our own superior air we inflate around ourselves (the thought of being above the animal kingdom, that we are the more intelligent) are all ultimately a part of nature and belong in a natural world. The decline of a human- no matter what race, class, sex, or significance he or she carries, will always be one with nature again. The deceased girl is deteriorating and slowly becoming one with nature, thus growing antlers and branches across her body to indicate the natural decomposition humans go through at one point in life. The deer is shown alongside the girl, not to contrast humanity versus animality, but to show how distinctly similar human and nature can be, and, how beautiful they are as one. |
