ARTIST STATEMENT
From the ancient Greek sculptures to today's heterogeneous array of arts, imperfection is scorned. They focus on the epitome of visual beauty of the human body. “Lazy Eyes” is my way to represent those that are often left out of the history of art. The farmer, tired from living off the African lands, is old and wrinkled. He is not the handsome charismatic man that the artist from the previous generations often focus on. Nor is he the popular celebrity that new generations stalks daily on their social media. I wanted to focus on a person that is modest.
In some ways, this man reminds me of my grandfather. Like my grandfather, he was a modest farmer. But what intrigues me the most are their eyes; its perfectly identical. Though these two men lived in completely different environments and cultures, their eyes appear to reflect the hardships, which go beyond the color of their skin, they have faced. “Lazy Eyes”, like I have stated, is a way to represent what history’s art has left out, the connection between humanity that's more than skin-deep. |
