ARTIST STATEMENT
This piece is part of a larger series, one in which I concentrate on an individual’s travels through the extremes of eating disorders and how their body image affects them internally as well as physically. As an artist i really enjoy working with various mediums; cut paper, acrylic, pen, and watercolor that I was able to develop through this series. In this image my use of color and technique are used to express despair and deprivation. This person is undefined and painterly, blending more into their almost-nothing background, mimicking the way they feel internally. Their environment is dark and dreary, emphasizing the emptiness and sadness they are experiencing. The only bright, more opaque colors are one the magazine clippings, which they are throwing up. All of the pieces are cut from food and weight loss advertisements, representing the exterior forces that caused their negative body image in the first place which they now have internalized and are symbolically purging. |
