Through the Machineries

ARTIST STATEMENT
I create art because I want to tell stories visually and construct people, worlds, and places that do not exist in reality but can exist in our minds. I create art because I want to add fantasy to not only my life, but the viewers' life. When I build a world or scene in my art, through the atmosphere I create, I am able to convey emotions such as grief, joy, hope, etc. I enjoy creating art because there is so much viewers can analyze when looking at a work. Because each object or color included in my art must be deliberate, there is meaning to each one. In this piece, I focused on using various shades of blue to create a dream-like, surreal atmosphere in the piece and I used gold in parts such as the watch, telescope, and sun plate to add a sense of magic. In my artwork, I tend to add a work of literature that relates to the work in some way, so in this piece I added a copy of Gravity's Rainbow. I chose to use acrylic paint in this piece because acrylic has a certain vibrance to it that I thought would make the white, gold, and blue stand out against each other.

My artwork centers around themes of escapism, hope, and dreams for the future. The piece is from my concentration with the theme of "People and their Messes." The concept behind the theme is that people's messes say a lot about their personalities, habits, and ambitions. This piece tells the story of a child who spends his time stargazing each night, drawing constellation maps, and hoping to one day travel to outer space. The piece is titled "Through the Machineries" as a reference to a quote from Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow, in which Pynchon states, "Through the machineries of greed, pettiness, and the abuse of power, love occurs." The reasoning behind this title is that the child is able to escape the banalities of everyday life, escape a world in which most of the people are jaded and no longer capable of feeling wonder, by submersing himself in his passion of exploring the night sky.

Each of the 4 pieces exhibited by my students are artworks they have created in response to the same prompt assigned to them in November for their Concentration section of their AP portfolios, however these are all very recent compositions.  As an AP Studio Art teacher my job is to help my students realize their artistic potential and build their technical mastery by challenging them every step of the way. I assign work by concept and encourage the use of a variety of mediums from student to student rather than introducing specific class assignments.  As they progress I often ask them to think of each piece as a "moment in time" or a "frame from a movie", in other words the viewer should linger just a bit longer as they ponder what may happen next, and what may have happened in the moments before this scene occurred. To inspire them and get their engines running I give them the following hand-out.
