Life Drawing #3Bella Romero

ARTIST STATEMENT
This was an assignment from my life drawing teacher. We were to draw the model from any angle, and we had 6 hours to draw them. For my medium, I chose charcoal pencil. There is something more finished about the appearance of the charcoal in comparison to graphite, and there is something more pleasantly realistic about the effect it has on textured paper. However, the medium is also quite unforgiving. Ultimately, it was to my advantage, as I was able to smooth over wide expanses or fix sharp details. From this study, I learned how to give skin a smooth but realistic texture and appearance. However, what I enjoyed the most was studying the muscles on our subject’s back, and replicating them on my paper. His skinny frame made all of his muscles quite prominent, even in such a relaxed pose, and I was able to etch each one accurately. Since I created this work, I have found particular pleasure in drawing and studying muscles and their structure. |
