Hidden Seascape

ARTIST STATEMENT

“Hidden Seascape” represents an unconventional approach to painting the sea. This painting began as a commissioned piece for a client who spent her youth in Hawaii and continued to have a deep love and respect for the ocean and sea turtles. Rather than concentrating on the entire animal, the focus is on the head area, which incorporates a tremendous amount of detail, line, pattern and repetition. Organic lines create volume within the work, while the color palate is intentionally chosen to pull the viewer into the piece using complementary colors. Contrasting colors are also implemented to create visual interest, playing with the cool tones in the sea and the warm hues in the turtle. Through this, the manipulation of light and color brings forth the life and beauty that remains most hidden under the water’s surface. “Hidden Seascape” successfully captures a unique form of life in a natural and holistic way.
